of "installing beta in separate directory":

Although you can do this, those that have done so in the past have
usually done so by accident and have nearly always lost everything
(mail, filters, settings). This is a result of running an old version
of TB having converted their data to work with a newer version.
Invariably, the old version spots a problem with the data and wipes it
out, rendering it useless for new and old alike.
So, my advice is "don't". I also advise backing up the mail folders
and account data (which is with them) before starting up the beta.
