First, I absolutely and completely agree.

The way I see it, the search utility should have an interface similar
to the filter sets.  With the ability to create sets and associate
multiple sets of search criteria, it is very easy to create
sophisticated seaches.  The search utility is severely lacking in this
department.

Now for the ugly work around, you can create a manual only filter that
has search criteria.  Have the filter create a copy of the messages in
a temporary folder.  You can then apply the filter to any folder with
the refilter command.  This is obviously far from ideal, but short of
coming up with some very sophisticated regular expressions *each* time
you do a search, it's the best I can offer.
