Actually, it's a nested fail-safe.

if  the  ABhandle  is  not  available, use the ABfirstname /then/ (and
finally)  if  the  ABfirstname  is  not  available  use  the  original
OFROMFNAME instead.

That  way,  you'll always get something, whether or not the individual
is in your address book.
