Have you tried the <CTRL>+<]> shortcut? It takes you from one unread
message to the next, expanding threads as necessary as you go along.
It doesn't matter where in the list you start either because if you
reach the end of the message list and there's an unread message
further up, the CTRL+] shortcut will again start from the beginning of
the message list.
