1. How did this happen?

Is it possible that you have checked the "Maximum number of stored
messages..."-option (or the "Keep messages in base for (days)..."-option) in
your folder-settings?

2. What can be done about it?

Have you tried "Folder | Browse deleted messages" for the relevant folders?
