AFAIK IMAP doesn't download your messages, it just gets the list of
messages and you download/get them "on the fly". It's all stored and
done in the server.

This has the added advantage that you can check your e-mail on
different machines and you will basically have the same stuff
available to all.

You also save space locally, but you may loose speedines if you have a
slow connection to the server.

That's the theoretical part of it. I no longer use IMAP, and have
always used POP3 with TB, so I don't know how the IMAP support is or
how it words on it.
