If it is a <bing> it might be that there occured an error while looking for mail. The reason for the error can be found in the logfile, which is made for each account. Pressing <ctrl>+<shift>+A will open the log of the current accunt. Perhaps you should first check spelling of Pop-server (and username). Have you recieved any mail at this account? BTW: The configurable sounds are played only when you *receive* a message.
