If you don't like it (and it really does only make sense if everybody would use it) you can disable it in "Account Properties" / "Templates" / "Reply" - Option "Use reply numbering in the subject line". If you want to disable it not overall but for defined folders or recipients you can add the macro '%SINGLERE' in the specific reply template.
