If the message actually contains the images (with proper references in the
HTML part) the Bat would display them. In your case it is likely that the
message doesn't actually include the images but they need to be fetched to
be displayed. To do that you need your browser.

In contrast to other mail programs the Bat does not have a real web
browser included. Whether this is good or bad is debatable. Most users
prefer this behavior because it makes the Bat invulnerable to all the
undesired side-effects of HTML messages (scripting virii, web bugs, etc.;
more about web bugs can be found under
http://www.privacyfoundation.org/resources/webbug.asp).
