Hi, Gerard.

I use a similar technique that has 4 different types of filters:

1. Messages from Senders in my address book. My address book has a
single entry called "Mailing Lists" that contains, in the "E-Mail
address(es)" field, a list of the Sender addresses of *all* the
mailing lists to which I'm subscribed.

2. Messages from mailing lists without a reliable Sender address. This
filter contains segments of addresses from mailing lists that either
change their Sender address with every message or have a variety of
different Sender addresses. Ex: amazon.com, ebay.com, etc. The Sender
segments are separated by "|", the "OR" symbol.

3. Messages from identifiable spam Senders. Such messages are routed
to Trash.

4. Everything else is sent to a "Probably Spam" folder.

This strategy works very well and is simple to maintain.

regards, Andy
