Thank you Roelof I was just about to try your suggestion but decided
to 'surf' the net first. I ran IE and noticed that my Intranet home
page applet took ages to load. I also noticed that my .png graphics
were not displaying.

That rang a bell. I remembered about a year ago I had the same
folder/message problem with THEBAT and *also* the problem with IE not
displaying .png graphics. On that occasion I re-installed 5.5 and it
cured the IE and THEBAT faults. (I'd assumed that THEBAT, being so
good, had 'cured' itself).

So I've just reinstalled IE 5.5 again and it's fixed the IE problems
and...the problem in THEBAT has gone. So could it have been some
corrupted shared DLL file?
