Because it becomes that large as an attachment. Let me try to explain it
as non-technical as possible:

eMail was once designed as a medium for *text* messages. Back in those
days, people thought one could use 7 bits for any character (which may
be true for the English speaking part of the world).

Now, if you want to send an attachment, it is interpreted as a stream of
bytes, or 8 bits characters. To transfer this over the internet, the MUA
has to convert the attachment, so that all characters match standard
ASCII codes. Obviously, that means a loss of information (from 8 to 7
bits) which has to be compensated by producing bigger files.
