Yes, there are big differences, but a beta is a beta and not an
upgrade.

You have to make a backup every time before you install any beta
version; this is basic. The beta will use your settings. You need to
subscribe to the TB beta list to know of any bugs, and also to find
out about new betas. Never use an old beta: it is sure to contain
bugs, as otherwise there wouldn't be a newer one. The last version I
know of is 1.54 beta 31.

I recommend to listen in on the beta list first, then download and
install the current (!) beta, and jump right into beta testing. ;-)

However, if you want to upgrade, you should wait for a release.
