Because IMAP is a fully online mail handling protocol. TB is a fully
off-line mail handling client. They come from opposite ends of the
same pond and the writers have had a conceptual problem in making a
bridge.

I don't know what the timescales for IMAP support are. I do know that
there is no improvement in IMAP in the current beta versions.
