I gather they are HTML mail with eastern characters - usually of the
Far Asian variant, sometimes Russian. They seem to be widespread at
the moment.

All in all spam and junk mail have risen sharply in number the last
few weeks. For years the general spam filters of GMX worked very well,
but now the let through more than 10 messages of that sort per day.
compared to one or two a month before.

Yes, you are, and that is quite natural. As long as it doesn't get
unhealthy (racist) it's alright. ;-)

Until now I have only one spam filter using the typical badly formed
subjects (lots of Dollar signs and such). I've not come around to make
up a filter for those new breed (Asian, Russian or the ones using "re:
order" as a subject), but I think it should be easy by using the
headers. Surely the used character set or even language is put in
there, just look for it and filter for it.

That shuld work as long as you don't receive legitimate mail in these
sets/languages.
