Hello Everyone...

For more than two months I've been thrashing with a problem that was
first confusing, then annoying, and has now reached the Threshold of
Pain.

It started one day when I received an Outlook-created text/HTML combo
message that wouldn't display either the text or HTML portion. After
receiving that message (which long ago has been deleted and purged),
every HTML message now exhibits the same problem. Basically, when I
try to open an HTML immediately after downloading mail:

1. A viewer window opens, but all header fields are blank, the message
area is blank, and there are no tabs at the bottom that would indicate
there are two portions to the message.

2. Pressing Ctl-Shift-K (to show complete header info) has no effect.

3. (This is bizarre) Clicking in the header-field portion of the
viewer window causes the header field titles ("To:", etc.) to scroll
upward, showing the other header field titles. All fields are blank,
and it only scrolls upward.

4. No matter what I do (short of forcing it to be marked as read), the
message stays marked as unread.

5. If I close TB!, reopen it and then try to open the HTML message
before opening any other messages, it will open "normally" (although
it seems to take an inordinate amount of time). It will be marked as
read, and I can view both the text and HTML versions of the message.
(But if I open a straight text message first, I can't open the
text/HTML message.)

6. If I receive HTML messages throughout the day and go through the
scenario of closing TB! and re-opening to open HTML mail, I'll
eventually get an eAccessViolation exception and have to shut down
TB!, or TB! will sometimes just lock up and I have to terminate it
through the Task Manager. This seems to be getting steadily worse, and
I'm finding myself having to reboot at least once a day now.

Again, all this started one day, out of the blue. When I discovered
that by restarting TB! I could read the e-mail, I found the first
problem message had used a background .gif for the HTML, and I was
seeing its file name just before the text of his message (I contacted
the person who sent it, and it appeared normal to him).

I had not installed any new software the day the problem showed up,
nor do I remember upgrading anything. I've shut off my virus detector
(AVG) temporarily, but the problem persists.

I guessed that TB's message base had somehow gotten corrupted, but
wasn't sure what to do. Here's what I've done to date:

1. Uninstalled TB! and re-installed with the copy I had.

2. Downloaded a fresh copy of 1.53d, uninstalled, and re-installed
with the fresh copy.

3. Compressed and purged all folders.

4. Deleted all attachments (they were stored separately), compressed
and purged all folders.

If you're still with me, this is where I'm asking for help. I'm
considering backing up and restoring the message base, but uncertain
whether I should try it.

Anybody have any suggestions?

-Don
