Hello Colin,
an aside note. I went back to Thawte to get a new certificate for this
email account, and I got most of the way through the process until it
got to the part about generating the key pair. It gave me an error ( I
forget the text 3 words) but basically I tried all the different types
of encoding and got the same error. I had to EXIT from the PGPKeys
tray program, THEN it worked.

you basically sign up, and request a certificate, they send you the
signup info by email. I have certificates for each email ID I use.
Thawte also mentioned that they are discontinuing PGP support.
