For example, if you wanted to delete all the messages, select Global - Set Flags - Delete. You can remove them again by going to Global - Reset Flags - Delete. If you only want to affect a few messages, select the few, and click Message - (option) like Read, Delete etc. The start transfer button just performs the operation you requested... for example if you told it to set the Read flags on your messages to On... start transfer would tell the mail server to read the messages. (so on and so forth). As for the mailbox controller...
