Hello Greg,

I think you brought up a number of interesting points and I would like
to comment on some of them. I will not quote most of your message,
though.

> I would think with making TB! available for use with news groups (i.e.
> via plugin) more options would exist.

As I think you know, I (and a number of other TB users) already use TB
for newsgroups. :)

What options are you thinking about?

> So if no other options exist, then you are forced to micro manage

That is basically what I am doing at the moment. For example, this
list is set to keep messages for 15 days. When I see one that I think
I may be interested in referring to in the future, I Park it so it
won't be deleted when it is older than 15 days.

But I think this is not what you are looking for, I think you are
missing (like me) some of the options Virtual Access has, aren't you?

I will mention some of the options that I think your are missing (I
certainly am) also with the intention that perhaps "someone" may be
"listening" and take note.

- I think your are missing that in VA, for each folder, you can select
the delete (prune) options to: Never (not even manually), Only
Manual delete or Prune when older than...

- I think you are missing that in VA, because it does "real threading"
(I will comment on this later), even if you have selected "Prune
when older than..." NO message in a thread will be deleted/purged as
long as there is ONE message in the thread that is "younger" than
  the number of days specified.

- I think that your are missing that in VA, in your preferences, you
may select that "siblings" in a thread inherit certain flags of the
"father", like Keep (park), Ignore, etc.

- I think you are missing... VA. Period. :-)

Now, aside of the fact that VA has those options because the
developers thought they were really useful and implemented them many
years ago, those options are possible because, as I have mentioned
above, VA does _real_ _threading_. I'll explain what I mean.

In TB, threading is just a a way to "view" the messages in a folder:
by reference (using the In-Reply-To: and References: headers), by
Subject, by From or To. But they are just _views_. In VA, the messages
are threaded, and will remain threaded, independently of the view you
select for the messages pane. Yes, this _real_ threading is possible
because, for each folder, VA assigns a unique and sequential number to
each massage that "comes in" to that folder. The _real_ threading
mechanism is quite simple: when messages are being "imported" into a
folder, by looking at the In-Reply-To or References headers (and/or
the Subject, if this option has been selected in preferences) VA will
'locate' the messages "father", get its internal assigned number, and
then create a new pseudo-header line "Comment to NNNNN" where NNNNN is
the number of the father.

This, added to the normal *.idx file for each folder is what makes
those options that you miss possible. And also because this real
threading, is why if you accidentally delete the root of a thread (or
a branch of a thread) the siblings are shown as "orphans".

> Now I know I could write a macro...

A macro? How? As far as I know, in TB's context, macros are only
usable in templates, right?. A macro, to me, would be some way to
"code" or "record" a number of key strokes (menu options selections)
and assign it to a single Hot Key or button in a user configurable
toolbar.

> How about an "Ignore" switch?

I am experimenting with a somewhat emulation of VA's Ignore function
in TB. It's working, but I still want to try to tweak it a little bit.
It will never be as easy to use as in VA.

> I must be missing something here because there has to be an easier
> way.

I think you are missing... VA. ;-)
