This can be done. With the list in focus, hit alt+2 to thread by
subject. In the message list, left click the creation date column
header bar until you see the little arrow pointing downwards. I
assume that you want the newer messages at the beginning of the
threads which is what this will do.

You can also do this via the menus 'View/Sort by' and 'View/View
threads by'.

If you use the toolbar buttons you have to use the message list
associated with the folder view that you've opened up. You have to
enable the message list for it (View/Message List) and then configure
the message list the way you wish it to be.

I think you're not understanding what the navigation keys/commands do.

'Move to next unread message' takes you to the next unread message in
a thread, no matter where in the thread it resides. If you're in the
middle of a thread, and it's the last unread message in the thread,
the move to next unread message command will take you to the next
unread message in the nearest thread down the list containing unread
messages. It will also expand the thread and drill down to the unread
message that is least deeply within the thread.

'Move to previous unread' does the same thing but in working up the
list and not down the list.

'Follow next' moves you to the next *displayed* message in the list
working downwards. It will not expand threads. However, it will move
down through messages in a thread if the thread is expanded and the
messages within it are displayed.

'Follow previous' does what 'follow next' does but in the opposite
direction.

This should be optional. Having this be the case would defeat the
whole purpose of having a separate list in the folder view. I
personally use a different sorting method for many of my folder views.

Well, I hope what I wrote helps. :-)
