Exactly my settings in the folder view, but: I have also checked
"descending". :-)

I just tried it again. Spacebar (and I do use the space bar if
the next mnessage is bold, otherwise I use crtl-]) goes to the next
message down. Maybe this has to do with "descending", but if I don't
makr that, the order will be such that the oldest message is at the
bottom - but the space bar will still go down (which I don't want at
that time).

This is no inconsistency per se. But you can set the preview pane
versus the folder vieews with different settings, so that they behave
differently. I believe this is what you have done.

Try Thread by References / Sort by Creation / Descending. Works here.
