  Consider the following:

  Use a different split style, ex: full height file tree
  which allows you to see a good portion of everything. When
  you want to read a msg just double click on it & a new
  window will pop up. From there you can go pretty much full
  screen & move on to the next msg as you wish.

  After that, you can move to any other folder by Menu ->
  Navigation -> Move to Folder or by keyboard via
  <SHFT><CTRL> G.

  Maybe you'll find that more convenient.
