I'm glad it was the right idea. I guess TB! executes the templates like a
program, i.e., line after line. So the quotestyle must be defined before
the quotes themselves are called.

Sorry, I don't know. I'm not even sure which macro you're referring to.

I use initials for quotes in mailing lists, where they are useful in longer
threads with multiple participants. For private mail I have turned them
off.
