1) If you don't want it to load at start up remove it from the
   Startup group.

2) If you want it to start, but not "full screen", change the
   properties of the shortcut to start "normal".

3) If you want it to start minimised to the "Tray", add the command
   line parameter /MINIMIZE to the shortcut in the Startup group.
   Oh yes, and change the Options | Preferences to minimise to tray.

4) If you don't want it to check mail on startup, change the account
   properties | Options to *not* check for mail on startup.

I think that covers all of the permutations from the original
question :-).
