If you send a message to someone, anyone, you do *not* get a copy back (unless you CC to yourself). The only copy you have on your computer is the one in your Sent folder, which you can filter into another folder. (BTW Over here, if I have a folder for a certain friend, I will filter the sent messages into the same folder as the incoming messages. No need to go via the Inbox again.) Mailing lists are a special case. Because they send you any message that the list server receives.
