AFAIK the limit is the available disk space.

I think it depends on your processor speed as well. My TB! contains some
22,000 messages, with the largest single folder being TBUDL with about
10,300 messages. It takes about a second and a half to open TBUDL, but
then, my processor only runs at 200 MHz... ;-)) Regular or maybe frequent
compressing of your folders will always help for good performance. :-)
