Haven't followed this thread, but from what I saw in the quotes ...

AFAIK, every TV set and monitor nowadays (TV in Germany at least since
1968) do have a *Degaussing* function, which doesn't de-ionise but
de-magnetise the tube - at start-up (switching it on). It's the loud
"Boing" noise one hears. Shouldn't put magnetically sensitive
appliances like watches near a TV/monitor.

This de-magnetising is needed to get clearly separated colours, if the
tube is magnetised it will show psychedelic colours like green faces
...
