Better than RETR use TOP, because you can retrieve only headers (top msg# 0) or n first lines (top msg# n) or the entire message (top msg# 99999 or using retr here). Also, I've found out that using TOP the POP server does not mark the message as read (although I haven't found many servers or clients who honors this) because you are not asking for RETRieval but for watching the first TOP lines... And you don't have to download a 1.5 Mb message to find out the message is spam... TOP is also the command used by Mail Dispatcher. My program uses TOP n to retrieve headers & first lines, and a button let you download more lines or the entire message if required.
