"References" and "In-reply-to" headers are actively used by
threading clients to display cascading threads "by reference". They
are active and pertinent headers. Comment headers are for human
reference only and form no part of threading mechanisms.

By editing the Follow-up headers, you can remove a message from a
thread (say you want to start a new thread from the middle of
another) or, by copying the follow-up headers from a reply into
another message, you can bring threads together. It's a bit
technical, but there for those that want to play.
