This sounds like overkill to me as well.

I can't offer a sollution for your problem as I understand it, but I
can offer some advice so you don't need to worry about it in the
future.

I had the same problem when switching ISPs several years ago. I was
going from dialup to cable so an Email address change was mandatory.
I purchased my own domain name. I didn't get hosting and all the
other bells and whistles that are available. I really didn't need
them. I just notified everyone in my address book of my address
change to my own domain. I kept the dialup for a month to be sure
everyone got the change made.

I think most companies that host domains offer free forwarding of both
mail and web page URLs. If in doubt, check before you purchase. Just
a domain name CAN be purchased for under $10 US per year. I have
moved my web page several times between different free hosts and all
that is required is a simple change of the forward. My Email will
never have to change now either as I just change the forward if and
when needed.

On an unrelated note...you may also want to have a free Email account
to help control spam. I use my Yahoo account any time an Email is
required in a form or to gain access to a web site. It's simple to
find the top message if they mail a password, but when they sell my
Email address to 50 or so spammers, it doesn't land in my primary
inbox. I just go to Yahoo once a week and delete the junk. Last time
it was about 450 messages. Nothing but spam.
