I have had this a couple of times, but opening (and closing) a
folder view window cleared the error and I haven't seen it for a
long while now.

It is very much a transient error. It persists within the "current
view". If you are using the preview window when you first get it,
then you'll have to switch from RTV to PTV and back to get rid of
it. If you see it in a folder view then you need only close the
folder view and open another (or the same) folder view to clear it.
