I noted this as well, though the delay would occur only when
incoming messages contained attachments to be scanned.

I can say no in the case of DrWeb. The plug-in for it works very
nicely.

If you're already running a realtime system scanner then the plugin
will not confer any added protection. For me, it adds conveniences.
Infected messages are moved and placed in a TB! 'quarantine' folder.
I could have the plugin delete the infected attachment, attempt to
clean infected attachments or send a virus notification message to
the sender. You can also scan outgoing messages.
