I agree with this, although I think that some news-reader features are common to those of a specialist email client, particularly in the handling of mailing lists. I am thinking of things like Ignore Thread, which I always found useful in Agent as a way of dealing with high volume groups and mailing lists. I know that this can currently be done using filters, but it is not easy.
