I just did a fresh install of the current TB version (1.62i) on a
computer where TB had never run before and it went like a breeze. (On
Win 98se)

What version did you try to install?
On what OS?
Do you have the privileges to create new directories?
What happens when you create that directory manually?
When's the last time you defragged your disk?
When's the last time you ran scandisk?
How many free space have you left on your fixed disk?
