Just tried it with 3800 messages (this year's postings to tbudl) and exporting and importing (into another folder) just went fine. I've always been under the impression that unix mailbox was a rather wide supported format. Most Linux and Unix mua's support it and many on other platforms too. (For importing/exporting purposes.)
