If others don't want to read much further, here's the executive summary: my
problem seemed to be caused by the old ROOTCA.ABD file. When
that's replaced by the one that comes with 1.62i, my problem
goes away.
I sort of combined all Roelof's suggestions. Purge & compress didn't help
but it always makes me feel better.
What I ended up doing was:
- overinstall
- rename the mailstore directory
- create an empty directory with the old mailstore name
- running TB!
this, handily, retained the account names and created an empty
subfolder for each.
- closing TB!
- copying account data folders back
- running TB!
I had all my email back. Hurrah for our team!
- backing up addrbook.ini and *.abd in the new mailstore
- Copying addrbook.ini and all the .abd files from the old mailstore
- running TB!
This reproduced the hang-and-exit I mentioned
- one by one, restoring the .abd files created by 1.62i
It turned out that rootca.abd from my 1.53d installation is the
one that was causing trouble.
Finally I tried opening the old rootca.abd from the address book. It
seemed to open OK but once I'd closed TB! it wouldn't open again.
Er, that's it. Once again thanks to Roelef for suggesting approaches.
