Alias usually means a name you are also known as. In the case of email (and the recent discussion about the Beta mailing list) alias means an email address which points at the proper email address. For example, if my main email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED], but people often misspell it as [EMAIL PROTECTED], I could create an alias which would point mail sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] to the real email address.
