Sure. Take care that it won't check for new mail.
So
uncheck 'combined delivery' at account properties - transport
and
check 'Ignore check all accounts request' at account properties - options
at the same place uncheck 'Check mailbox at start-up' and 'Periodoc
checking'

In order to make sure that you'll never check mail, use a faulty
server/user/password combination. The other precautions are merely to
prevent error messages.
