I think you're stuck with the method neurowerx outlined. Or, you could modify a hot-key activate filter to remove the references and in-reply-to fields and imports to the outbox - there's such a routine in the library and one I've written in tb-tech. With the 1.63 Beta, here's another method: Hit Reply. In View, make sure References is checked.
