If you want to be able to mark a message with a color grouping by hitting a key combination, then do not bother with a filter. Just set the key combination (though someone else will have to explain how; I cannot remember the menu or keyboard path to set them....) For example, I have set Alt-F to mark one color group, and Alt-C to clear the color group from the selected message. Then, you can search on color groups to create a virtual folder, or create a filter to perform whatever actions you need.
