Hello bat users, long time ago i enabled account option "save attachment in separate folder". at that time i thought this could help to prevent the message.tbb file from growing too large, and might have better reliability.
but now, i regret. this brought many inconviniences: - when message base folder is moved (i.e., moved to another drive because the old drive doesn't have enough space), the latest 1.63beta and 2.0beta still try to find existing attachments in the old folder. of course nothing can be found. interesting thing is, 1.62r seems to be more clever in this case. it uses relative path to find attachments, so moving message base won't affect 1.62r. - there is only one "attach" folder for each account. the worst is, even if i move messages to another account, the attachment files still remain in the old directory. this brings trouble to backup. for example, i want to move all 2001 and 2002 mails out of current folder (with attachment), and burn them to CD. so future backup will only work on 2003 mail and attachments, which has less data and can be finished much faster. so, screwed up again here. every time i do backup, 2001, 2002 mails are mixed together with 2003 mails. i always have to backup all of them. simply speaking, once attachments are stored in separate folder, there is NO WAY to take them out, or move to another directory. - once there was a bug in some versions of thebat: the attachment file is not deleted when message is deleted (even with "delete attachment when msg deleted from trash" option enabled). how annoying this is. - this is minor but still annoying: message size is never correctly displayed in message list. the size only shows text part size. it seems that keeping the attachments in message body is a better idea. at least the attachments will move with the message, so both of the above cases get solved. now my questions are: - i already have thousands of mails in inbox, and attachments are stored in separate folder. is there any way to put attachments back to message body? i tried "copy msg", "export then import", but none worked. only the text part of message is copied/exported. - is message.tbb file reliable when it becomes huge? since i'm going to start saving attachments in message.tbb, it'd better be reliable enough so that one crash won't corrupt the whole message box. - if attachments are stored in message body, when i move messages from one folder to another, the attachments are also moved, is this true? my plan is, for every couple of months, move old messages from inbox to an "archive" box. so, i can reduce the inbox message.tbb file size by doing a purge/compress. is this true? thanks for any advice.
