I also had this problem and other "justify" problems but could not figure which one of the format settings would do it for me. I also wasn't sure what benefits I would be losing by unchecking particular format options. Anyway, the ability to keep single line breaks is worth it. Whenever my paragraphs break down and loses its format, I simply hit Alt-L and I am back in business. However, I am now able to have single line breaks. Mika, thanks for asking the question.
