Sounds like you may be using wrong type authentication or download
method.
I've normally seen that message when trying to use ESMTP commands on
an older SMTP server.
In Account->Properties->Transport.Receive what is your protocol, connection and
port ..and while still in ...Receive->Authentication which radio is
selected?
Ie in mine: protocol: pop3 connection: regular
port: 110 authorization type: regular
Do your settings match what your ISP requires? Do they match what
your other mail clients use? Does kangaroo really taste like
chicken?
