I would think "Delete messages after xx days" in the folder properties
is responsible for this.

This setting is not sticky. If you close TB and reopen it, the Display
setting will have been forgotten. In any case, when you are in the
main menu and have the message list in focus, hitting <esc> will cause
all messages to be displayed.
