I've been using The Bat! since version 1.1something, through dozens of upgrades, quite a few of which would have qualified as a "new" version requiring a upgrade fee. I'm almost embarrassed to have to pay only $17.50 now for the upgrade to v.2, knowing how much work has been done over the years by the developers, as they have continually improved TB and freely distributed each rev with users. I spent more than than on lunch yesterday.
I have a lot of software now, especially for my Web site, for which I pay an annual subscription fee. We all hate that idea, don't we? In the end, though, I think it's the only business model that will keep small software developers (that is, anyone not Microsoft) in business. RitLabs hasn't gone this route, but I think I'll buy an extra license or two in the hope that they don't follow the path of a lot of other great software that's no longer around.
