Hi all, I seem to be having a weird problem. Every now and then, I get an error when trying to send e-mail to my SMTP server. The mail is rejected and a window pops up saying, "Server reports error. The response is: Incorrect authentication data." I can receive POP mail just fine on the account.
This is what the log says: 10/8/2003, 15:12:12: SEND - Certificate S/N: 0, algorithm: RSA (1024 bits), issued from 01 Oct 2003 to 15 Feb 2031, for 1 host(s): mail.server.net. 10/8/2003, 15:12:12: SEND - Owner: US, Unknown, Unknown, Unknown, Unknown, mail.server.net, [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/8/2003, 15:12:12: SEND - This certificate is self-issued. 10/8/2003, 15:12:13: SEND - TLS handshake complete 10/8/2003, 15:12:13: SEND - connected to SMTP server 10/8/2003, 15:12:13: SEND - authenticating (plain)... 10/8/2003, 15:12:13: SEND - Server reports error. The response is: Incorrect authentication data 10/8/2003, 15:12:13: SEND - authenticating (login)... 10/8/2003, 15:12:13: SEND - WARNING: authentication failed 10/8/2003, 15:12:13: SEND - sending message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/8/2003, 15:12:13: SEND - The last address submitted was <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> !10/8/2003, 15:12:13: SEND - Message has not been sent. Server reply - Authentication turned on in your email client. >From another account to the exact same server, with all settings the same (except domain name), I am able to send mail. 10/8/2003, 15:22:17: SEND - Initiating TLS handshake 10/8/2003, 15:22:17: SEND - Certificate S/N: 0, algorithm: RSA (1024 bits), issued from 01 Oct 2003 to 15 Feb 2031, for 1 host(s): mail.server.net. 10/8/2003, 15:22:17: SEND - Owner: US, Unknown, Unknown, Unknown, Unknown, mail.server.net, [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/8/2003, 15:22:17: SEND - This certificate is self-issued. 10/8/2003, 15:22:17: SEND - TLS handshake complete 10/8/2003, 15:22:17: SEND - connected to SMTP server 10/8/2003, 15:22:17: SEND - authenticating (plain)... 10/8/2003, 15:22:17: SEND - Server reports error. The response is: Incorrect authentication data 10/8/2003, 15:22:17: SEND - authenticating (login)... 10/8/2003, 15:22:18: SEND - sending message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/8/2003, 15:22:18: SEND - message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] sent (450 bytes) 10/8/2003, 15:22:18: SEND - connection finished - 1 messages sent The difference seems to be that the "authenticating (login)..." seems to fail. The last time I had this problem, all domains on the server failed with this error. I submitted a trouble ticket and they installed a new certificate on the server and I was able to send e-mail again. Today, it is just one domain failing, so I am guessing that this rules out it being a certificate problem. (I suspect that when they restart the mail service because of changing the certificate, it fixes the problem.) Every time I open a trouble ticket for this problem, I get "20 questions" from the admin because no one else seems to be having this problem but me. They've suggested that it is a TB problem, but I don't think it is. I've googled and the only thing I can find are messages about people who haven't had the SMTP Authentication checked in their e-mail client getting that error. Mine is definitely checked. In fact, I've unchecked it, rechecked it, used the "same as email" settings, put in the username and password, etc., in order to see if it was some settings problem. I've tried this with SMTP, StartTLS and TLS. Same results. I don't see how it is a problem with TB. Am I missing something? I suspect that the only thing that will convince these guys that it is not TB is if I can tell them what the problem really is. Googling hasn't helped in this regard. Anybody have any clues? Could it be a locked file someplace? I do have shell access to the server and am able to get around and do some things. Is there anything I should be checking? Thanks for your help. -- Regards, Terry Using The Bat! v1.62r on Windows 2000 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 3 ________________________________________________ Current version is 2.00.6 | "Using TBUDL" information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
