I haven't tested this, but the general convention under Windows is
that if you encapsulate the filename (including the extension) in
quotations, then it won't append the default extension. i.e.

"MyOutputFile.msg"

This should solve your .msg vs .txt issue, but I don't know if it'll
fix the other problem you're having.
