Does it happen often?

As, Roelof mentioned it might be related to your firewall, depending
on certain factors(i.e.: if your e-mail client can't connect
consistently).

Also, it can be possible that the e-mail server gets taken off-line
for maintenance from time to time, or it crashed, or got disconnected
from the internet for some other reasons.  I get the same message when
the server, where the mailserver is running, is being rebooted.
