I've cleared the existing shortcut that used space, but as I couldn't
even assign the key I can't see how that could have been the problem.

I've just tried with another - in use - shortcut and it allowed me to
do that.

I think that this is a  bug. I've posted something in TBBETA asking if
someone else could try using SPACE as a new shortcut.
