If you were to telnet directly to port 25 of the server and enter your commands manually (as opposed to what mail clients do for you automagically) your last command to the server to let it know that you've completed your data entry would be a "." on it's own line. Sometimes you'll see this error if your connection has bogged down or disconnects.
